Music Friday: Wake Owl's 'Gold' Scores National Audience With Exposure on ABC's Grey's Anatomy

Welcome to Music Friday when we bring you great songs with jewelry, gemstones or precious metals in the title or lyrics. Today's tune is the brand new release, "Gold," from the Vancouver-based indie band, Wake Owl.

Led by talented singer/songwriter Colyn Cameron, Wake Owl scored a huge break when "Gold" was featured in the climactic final minutes of the November 8, 2012, episode of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy. With the national exposure (9.2 million same-day viewers), the song quickly gained traction and hit the #1 spot on Hype Machine’s Most Popular Tracks chart.

Ourvinyl.com wrote this stunning review of "Gold":

"Sometimes there is a song that stops you dead in your tracks, accompanied with lyrics that grab you from the bottom of your gut and make you feel, well, alive. Wake Owl’s “Gold” does just that. It creeps into your psyche slowly in the first minute, before it builds up. Then the drums kick in, and you find yourself fully immersed in it. It is one of those songs that can remove you from wherever you are, whatever you are doing, and haunts you."

A native of British Columbia, Cameron spent a brief period playing in other bands before creating and recording his own songs as Wake Owl. Supported by multi-instrumentalist Aiden Briscall and additional players, Wake Owl has toured the U.S. and Canada as the opening act for Bahamas, Zeus, and The Jezabels. Wake Owl will release its debut EP Wild Country on January 29.

Enjoy the videos below. The first is Wake Owl's live performance of "Gold" in the Bing Lounge in Portland, Ore., less than four weeks ago. The second video is the closing scene of the Grey's Anatomy episode in which the song is featured. The lyrics are below if you'd like to sing along.

"Gold"

Written by Colyn Cameron. Performed by Wake Owl.

So, didn't you find love or salvation in what they do,
A heart is built of gold, they fairies they are too, it's in the hands you hold,
How long can we ignore, we build a little more, and then we break our truth

'oooooo' (for four bars)

I don't feel like I'm falling, I'm up against the sky,
I said I'd taken it all in to make the good life,
I don't feel like I'm falling, I'm up against the sky,
Let's grab the heart of the world and turn into the light

But I cannot turn around, the angels hear me now, go where I'm bound,
You smile like you know the new world has been found

'oooooo' (for four bars)

I don't feel like I'm falling, I'm up against the sky,
I said I'd taken it all in to make the good life,
I don't feel like I'm falling, I'm up against the sky,
Let's grab the heart of the world and turn into the light
I don't feel like I'm falling, I'm up against the sky,
Let's grab the heart of the world and turn into the light

Iraqi Archaeologists Unearth 66 Beautifully Preserved Gold Coins Dating Back 1,400 Years

In the small city of Aziziyah, 40 miles southeast of Baghdad, a team of Iraqi archaeologists unearthed a stunning cache of 66 gold coins that are at least 1,400 years old, AFP reported. The artifacts have been linked to the Sassanid era that extended from 225 BC to 640 AD.

image

The coins — which depict flames and the insignia of a king or a god — were sent to a lab for age analysis, which will better pinpoint their year of origin.

Amazingly, the ancient gold coins are in excellent condition even though they may have been buried for two millennia.

image

Iraqi officials said on Monday that they hope to put the coins on display in Baghdad’s National Museum. Iraqi archaeologists believe that many more such coins exist, but vandals had stolen them from dig sites after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq and the subsequent removal of dictator Saddam Hussein from power.

It is estimated that 32,000 artifacts were plundered from 12,000 archaeological sites across Iraq, and 15,000 historical treasures were looted from the National Museum in Baghdad.

Indian Millionaire Hires Team of 15 Goldsmiths to Craft 22-Karat Shirt; Says It Will Dazzle the Ladies

Datta Phuge, a bachelor millionaire from Pune, India, is betting that his over-the-top 22-karat gold shirt weighing more than seven pounds and valued at $235,000 is going to be a big hit with the ladies. "I know I am not the best looking man in the world," he told MSN.co.nz, "but surely no woman could fail to be dazzled by this shirt."

image

The 32-year-old moneylender hired a team of 15 goldsmiths, who worked 16-hour days for two weeks to create and weave the gold thread for the garment.

"After extensive research on the design and the look of the piece, I decided to give it an armor-like appearance," designer Tejpal Ranka told the Pune Mirror.

It's made up of 14,000 gold flower rings that are interwoven with 100,000 gold spangles. The shirt was assembled on a fabric base of imported white velvet, and comes with six Swarovski crystal buttons and a gold belt.

Surrounded by his security team, Phuge — the self-proclaimed "Gold Man of Pimpri" — wore the shirt in public for the first time on New Year's Eve. To add even more bling to his look, the goldsmiths also crafted matching cuffs and rings for each finger. In all, Phuge wore 11 pounds of accessories to go with his shimmering shirt: about 10 gold chains, six bracelets and 25 rings. All the gold on his body added up to about 22 pounds.

The shirt fulfills Phuge's life-long obsession with gold. “People buy cars and go on holidays abroad,” he said, according to the Los Angeles Times. “For me, gold is the ultimate passion. I am looking at it as an investment which will keep appreciating.”

Rescue Dog Marlee and Friends Try to Find Lost Diamond Earring in Delightful Children's Tale

A delightful new children's book spotlights Marlee, the rescue dog, and her animal friends, as they scour the beaches of Grand Cayman Island to find a lost diamond earring. Ideal for children ages two to nine, "Marlee and the Diamond Earring" by author Diana Ward is a beautifully illustrated picture book featuring the fantastical adventures of Ward's real-life canine companions.

image

The book was recently optimized for the iPad, so children can enjoy the narration, with different voiceovers for all the characters, which include Oreo, Princess, Dezzie and Bossy Bella.

image

In the story, the dogs meet a young woman who has lost her precious diamond earring on the beach. The dogs — along with their helpers, Sir Pinchy Crab, Mr. Turtle, Hoppy the One-Legged Seagull and Lou Lou the Laughing Gull — set out to save the day for the distraught woman. Children will be surprised to learn which animal eventually finds the earring.

image

Both the softcover and iPad versions of the book include photos of the "real" dog characters that live with the author in Georgetown, Cayman Islands. Wrote one reviewer on Amazon.com, "Part of the book's appeal is that the dogs really do exist."

Ward is currently working on versions of "Marlee and the Diamond Earring" in Chinese, German, Spanish and French. The iPad download costs $0.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and is available worldwide through the App Store in the Education category.

NBA Legend Phil Jackson Finally Gives Jeanie Buss the Ring of Her Dreams After 13-Year Courtship

NBA coaching legend Phil Jackson, who has been dating LA Lakers executive VP Jeanie Buss since the last millennium, has finally put a ring on it. Jackson’s long-awaited proposal was confirmed on Thursday when Buss took to Twitter with an announcement and photo.

“Twitter family - Phil finally gave me that ring I wanted! :-),” she tweeted.

The 67-year-old Jackson, who holds 11 NBA championship rings, presented Buss, 51, with a beautiful emerald-cut diamond ring flanked by two smaller emerald-cut diamonds on Christmas Day.

“I’m beyond happy,” Buss told ESPN. “I really didn’t want it to be news, but I knew people who followed me on Twitter cared about it and I’ve been wearing the ring since Christmas, so I figured I should let people know.”

image

Jackson is the former coach of the LA Lakers and Buss is the daughter of the team’s majority owner, Jerry Buss. The two met in 1999 and had been dating ever since. The couple has not set a wedding date.

If you’re saying to yourself, “I think I’ve seen another celebrity wearing a similar ring,” you’re right. Back in May of 2011, Kim Kardashian revealed her $2 million, 20-carat emerald-cut diamond ring given to her by professional basketball player Kris Humphries.

The couple married in August of 2011 and divorced 72 days later. The mammoth ring is currently at the center of a court battle in which Humphries claims that the marriage was based on fraud. He is seeking an annulment and the return of the ring. The courts will hear the case in February.
